Leather dog collar Q & A

WHY CHOOSE LEATHER COLLARS ?

Choosing the right collar for your pup can be a big deal. Not only do you want the best friend to look great, but also wanna make sure it is safe, comfortable and reliable.

I make all my collars handmade from high quality veg tanned leather to achieve the best possible quality.

There are a number of things many of you would want to know before purchasing leather collars and here are some of the questions answered for you.

ARE LEATHER DOG COLLARS SAFE?

Properly-sized leather dog collars are a safe choice for your pets.

Unlike other materials, they won’t wear out and break as time goes on. Your leather dog collar will be just as safe years later.

Leather collar are smooth and gentle and will not affect your dog's health in negative ways.

But

ARE LEATHER DOG COLLARS COMFORTABLE?

One of the benefits to choosing leather collars is their comfort. The natural material is quite soft against your dog’s skin, which reduces chances of irritation or inflammation. In fact, they’re one of the best choices for dogs with sensitive skin. The leather collar will absorb natural oil and will get even softer over years of use.

CAN LEATHER DOG COLLARS GET WET?

Many people believe that dog collars can’t get wet.

This is yes and no,

Although it’s a good idea to take your dog’s leather collar off when you’re bathing them, a well-treated leather collar can withstand a bit of rain or splashing without a problem.

However repeated contact with excess moisture will cause the dye on the carving patterns to dull or come off, so it is not recommended for the tooled design/painted part of the leather to get wet.

If the leather collar gets quite wet, condition the leather to replenish the natural oils. Then, allow it to air-dry.

CAN YOU WASH LEATHER DOG COLLARS?

I do not recommend washing the leather collar the way you wash everything else.

The key to washing your collar without ruining the leather is to understand how to wash leather.

Avoid harsh chemicals. Instead, clean the collar with water-dampened cloth if it gets a bit dirty.

Never apply heat to dry the collar, as this can ruin the leather. Instead, allow the collar to air-dry.

Apply some oil to revitalize it with natural oils and prevent it from drying or cracking.

WHAT SIZE LEATHER DOG COLLAR SHOULD I BUY?

The size of your dog’s collar matters. Too tight, and it can irritate the skin or become a choking hazard. Too loose, and your dog can slip the collar or get it caught on something.

The perfect fit will fit snugly, but not tight. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit precisely two fingers between your dog’s collar and their neck.

It’s important to check your collar’s fit on a weekly basis. Dogs can grow, and leather collars can stretch over time. Checking regularly allows you to adjust the fit of the collar as necessary.

ARE LEATHER DOG COLLARS BETTER THAN NYLON DOG COLLARS?

Nylon is one of the most popular dog collar materials.

Nylon dog collar is a budget-friendly, easy to clean and comes with lots of different styles.

These reasons make it an easy choice for many pet stores to populate their shelves with.

Downside to these cheap dog collars are;

Unlike leather collars, which are smooth, nylon can irritate your dog’s skin and cause chafing, especially if they’re the type of dog to pull at their lead.

Leather collar is smooth of the skin and last much longer than the nylon collars.
