Timeless beauty of vegetable tanned leather aging

So, you are about to start leather aging journey! I hope you are excited and I would like to be a little help for you... please read ahead :)

As a leather worker, I have had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable journey of vegetable-tanned leather as it ages gracefully over time.

When vegetable tanned leather begins its journey it starts off quite firm and gradually softens; a transformation that is fascinating and full of character called "Aging"

When you first lay your hands on a piece of vegetable-tanned leather, you'll notice its initial stiffness and rigidity. This is due to the natural tannin derived from plants such as oak, hemlock, or chestnut etc.

These tannins chemically bind with the fibers in the hide, creating a sturdy and durable character.

Initially, the leather may feel tough and somewhat unwelcoming, but this is very normal and it's just the beginning of its remarkable transformation.

As you use and handle vegetable-tanned leather products over time, you'll begin to notice a gradual softening of the leather.

The main thing that helps the aging of the veg tanned leather is moisture (not water!).

This includes both conditioning oil added by owner or natural oil from us human by handling the products.

As the leather absorbs moisture, it becomes more pliable and supple. (Friction and physical handling also adds to the process)

Moisture helps break down the rigidity of the collagen fibers, allowing the leather to flex and adapt to its surroundings.

If you want to speed up the process of softening, you can definitely use some moistening products however this is not necessary. Naturals oil of your hands is plenty enough help for the leather to age.

As veg tanned leather product is handled, surface layer forms over time, characterized by a beautiful darkening and a rich, nuanced color.

This is called "leather patina"

This tells the story of your leather's journey, reflecting the places it has been and the experiences it has shared with you.

Every piece of aged leather carries a history of use and exposure, making it a truly unique and one-of-a-kind item.

No two aged leather items will look exactly the same, adding to their charm and individuality.
